#15 Toast

It is Saturday morning, when the sun is shining bright upon the first morning of the weekend, we are slowly waking up, arms stretching out as we blink away the sleep from our eyes. Yet on the other side of the bedroom, in the kitchen, a meeting is in motion. Present at the congregation are representatives from the breakfast families that reside in the fridge. Though the meeting is a routine one every week, each food member is silent, daring another to speak first.

Mr Bread took a step forward.

"I will go," he said. He had seen his father and grandfather go just days before, and have accepted his fate. He will meet his death in flames. The human family loved toast. "Will anyone else join me?"

Miss Egg reached out and took his hand. "I'll go with you," she whispered. "We haven't known each other for very long, but my sisters are gone. I might as well hold the hand of someone before I have to jump into the flames."

"I think I have earned the right to stay behind. I'm always up for possible sacrifice during all three meals of the day," pointed out Mr Ketchup, who turned away, avoiding the furious glares from Mrs Mayonnaise.

"Sure, since one condiment stepped down, then the only other choice is me," Mrs Mayonnaise spat, fighting through the angry tears at the betrayal. You see, dear reader, Ketchup and Mayonnaise were the Capulets and Montagues of the fridge, and these two, its Romeo and Juliet.

"But there's also me and —"

"Oh do shut up, Peanut Butter," hissed Mrs Mayonnaise, "You know better than I do that the humans will not touch you or the jams if they got Miss Eggs on the table."

Dear reader, the self-sacrificing foods were not incorrect. For I was definitely craving an air-fryer baked egg in a hole, with melted mayonnaise.

Another weird one for the books. My family is recently obsessed with this recipe: a piece of sliced bread, a generous helping of japanese kewpie mayonnaise across four sides of the bread to create little walls to box in a raw egg; then you airfry the whole thing for 7 minutes at 175 degrees. Photo of said breakfast included.
