Charlotte Mui presents a personal interpretation of The Fool, the first card in the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck and one that is associated with new beginnings. Rife with symbolism of a new dawn, the work features a young nymph who wakes up in a surrealist landscape teeming with life, including fungi, floating fish, and a distant skyline reminiscent of Hong Kong. With this painting, Mui looks to the future with a magical and infectious sense of optimism.
A Collections Assistant at Asia Art Archive, Charlotte Mui (b. 1996, Hong Kong SAR) is an emerging artist whose practice centres on whimsical and detailed watercolour paintings. Her work reflects her experiences, dreams, and interest in mythology. In 2020, Mui illustrated and published a deck of tarot cards titled L’Œil de L’Âme. Her first solo exhibition was recently held at Alisan Fine Arts.
Mui lives and works in Hong Kong.”
The work was sold at HK$90,000 at the auction, nearly twice the high estimate.
