Me hanging in front of my 2m x 5.6m mural — The Star

Thanks to HKwalls and the Hong Kong Observation Wheel, I will be showcasing a mural I made in roughly 7 days alongside four other murals made by amazing young artists at the Central Harbourfront. This was made possible by HKwalls’ mentorship programme.

This is actually my second mural after nearly a decade since making my first, and is the analogue translation of my favourite card from The Gwai Lenormand 'The Star':

After several years of unrest, confusion, and stress, I wanted to create a piece that could relay my well-wishes for my home city and the Star was the perfect fit. Inspired by the Japanese konpeito candy and the tanhua, The Star is a card of hope, aspirations, and blessings. It was created with the sentiment that hope doesn't just fall upon us like a shooting star, but perhaps is something that we can grow and nurture together.

For the 2022 HKwalls Youth Mentorship Programme, [HKwalls] received more than 60 applications from very talented Hong Kongers. Of that 60+, five were selected by our mentors, and they have been meeting regularly to discuss their work, their ideas, and how to approach painting murals. Thanks to Hong Kong Observation Wheel, each young artist will be given a space at the Hong Kong Observation Wheel to paint a mural! — HKwalls Instagram

The Star mural by Charlotte Mui was inspired by one of her Lenormand tarot card illustrations she designed to represent hope and aspiration. As a tarot reader herself and aspiring muralist, Charlotte wanted to paint her first mural to help inspire and lift the community at a Hong Kong landmark. — HK Observation Wheel Instagram
